I'm currently on an Apollo 8 Quad system. It runs beautifully. My problem with them and the problem that most UAD users have is the DSP issue. I feel lucky in that I got in on the year end deal to get a free satellite with the purchase of my Apollo 8. I'm not sure what I'd be doing if I didn't have that. Some of those plugins eat up a TON of DSP (and I'm looking at you Neve).
The fact of the matter is that the modeled plugins on the Waves side that come with the same name as the UAD plugins just don't sound as good as UAD. UAD is expensive.
They DO throw you coupons all the time and run sales, but be prepared to spend some money if you're in on UAD. Waves ain't cheap tho either. Get some Waves plugins and before you know it you need that silly update plan and now you're looking at YEARLY $200+. I tend to go with the UAD stuff right now ONLY because I have the satellite and Pro Tools 12. PT12 allows me to freeze my plugins and free up some DSP. Read about it if you haven't already. Don't be afraid to incorporate a bunch of different tools into your DAW. If I were to rank the pure sound quality of each offering, I think the hierarchy would be UAD, Slate, then Waves. If I were to take into consideration the VALUE of each offering, based on the quality output, and the money output, and ultimately the return on that output. I'm ranking it Slate, Waves, UAD. However, If you spend a fair amount of time in this business (I'm 14 years in) I think it's important to remember that the vast majority of people who hear the results, will not be able to audibly tell the difference in the details. The untrained ear has no idea what it's searching for. I've got the best of both worlds, imo.

I have owned a commercially operating facility for 8 years now, and this is the easiest way I can tell you how UAD gears sounds: I have a very large collection out outboard gear that I use, it's very much a greatest hits of all of my favorite gear. I use all the analog gear for the key components in my mixes. When the 24 channels of outboard analog gear have been used, I use the UAD versions of the exact same gear. It holds up 100%!

So much so that I can dial in the same settings from the analog gear and the digital versions sound the same. Clearly this has a lot to do with making sure your setup has been calibrated and gain staging is being mindeded. But all in all, their plugins are rock solid. I have also used the waves and while I think they make great plugins, and I use them everyday. Their models of real gear would best be described as caricatures. They have the right ideas, but they are not the same at all. Slate stuff is probably second best in my opinion, I love his tape emulation, and I think all of the plugins sound really good, his compressors are spot on, the eqs are more like his take on the classics.
All in all, they are all great. And I'm could use any of them and be more than happy.
I am only speaking on how accurate their emulation of the analog gear is. I hope this helps you a little bit! They're great plug-ins, but they're so expensive.

You have to buy at least 500 dollars worth of hardware just to run them, and at that price, you don't get much processing power so you can't run too many of their plugs. I hate to sound like such a salesman, but Slate is so much better. Yea they don't have nearly the extensive amount of modeled plug-ins, but they're way cheaper, sound just as good, you don't have to buy dedicated hardware, and they are latency free! With UAD, your delay compensation goes through the roof. Slate you can put VMR on a track with a ton of modules and it's still instant. I REALLY like the UAD stuff.
If i had like 16 DSP cores i would make fake Neve and API consoles in PT and mix everything off the channel strips. But the DSP limitations are kind of a bummer, so i tend to only use their stuff on the tracks that really deserve the best sounds, like drums, bass and lead vocals.
UA makes it really easy to add more units to your system for increased DSP power though. The plugins themselves are kind of expensive, but i've never paid anywhere near full price for any of them. They do so many sales and coupons that if you just wait, you can get anything for like $75. I have basically all of the UAD plugins that i could have wanted and i've paid less than $1000 total in my year and a half of using their stuff.
It sucks having to rely so much on your interface to mix. It makes traveling tough. Ideally i'll get an apollo twin to add to my apollo quad, which will give me more DSP power, portability, and extra mic pres.
